Hi, I'm Lisa! I'm a licensed psychotherapist, LCSW, and I love helping anxious kids and their families.
I started Helping Anxious Kids because I wanted to help anxious children become better equipped to navigate through life's challenges...inside and out.
The most important message to give to any anxious child is that they have what it takes...that they can indeed handle what comes their way.
They just need a better strategy and that's what I teach.
My approach is family-oriented because anxiety can often grab a hold of the entire family in powerful ways.
Raising a child that struggles with anxiety can often be exhausting and frustrating.
Many of the intuitive responses that work well with many kids simply don't work with our anxious ones.
Often parents just don't know what to do anymore.
So, I'm here to help.
On a personal note, I'm a wife and the mom of an all grown up child.
On any given weekend, you can find my husband and I walking up and down those steep San Francisco hills, exploring all corners of our beautiful city.
And I understand how the kids who come to see me feel.
Anxiety showed up for me in a number of ways when I was a kid.
But, I didn't know anything about anxiety back then.
And my parents didn't either.
I didn't even know I was anxious!
So, what a relief it was for me when I found out what anxiety was, how it worked, and what I could do about it!
And now that is what I teach children and their families.
As a therapist...
I believe in providing families with active, concrete, solution and skill-based strategies that will help your family feel empowered.
I believe in a family-oriented approach with the child, parent/s, and therapist all taking an active role in the treatment.
I believe in the whole child approach--that your child is not his or her anxiety.
I believe therapy works best when children and parents are open to experimenting with different ideas and new ways of doing things.
I believe we shouldn't take anxiety as seriously as it would like for us to... humor and playfulness will be an integral part of our toolbox!
I believe it is essential to practice the skills learned in therapy at home. See my blog post 5 Ways Child Anxiety Treatment Should Be Like Piano Lessons.
